Title: Ice and Fire

I was so impressed with Daniel Pedersons' image of the sun shining onto the frozen fjord located at Tonsberg in Norway that I had to paint the image displaying the ice and fire of the sun acting upon it. Here ice develops on the inner parts of Oslo Fjord, and during exceptionally cold winters, the entire Fjord can freeze over. My aim was to depict the breakup of the ice and capture the glistening ice in the diminishing sunset.

Historically Tunsberg, is a city and municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, eastern Norway, located around 102 kilometres south-southwest of Oslo on the western coast of the Oslofjord near its mouth onto the Skagerrak.

Considered to be the oldest town in Norway, Tønsberg was founded c. ad 871 and became an important trading centre. In the 13th century King Håkon Håkonsson built his castle, Tønsberghus, there.

Tønsberg is also the site of Oseberg Mound, a Viking era burial mound. The Oseberg Ship was found in the Oseberg burial mound in 1904. This Viking era longship is now in the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. Archaeological excavations in 1904 uncovered history's largest and richest example of craftsmanship from the Viking Age.
